Escheatment is the process of changing custody of abandoned assets and/or accounts over to a state authority.
While Universal Music Group makes every effort to contact its artists and publishers to ensure they receive their earned royalties, escheatment occurs when we’re unable to make contact after a period of three (3) years.
Universal Music Group follows all state unclaimed property laws and remits unclaimed royalties according to state requirements. UMG is unable to retrieve royalties once remitted to the state of the recipient’s last provided mailing address. The recipient will need to contact the state directly to claim unclaimed property.
The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators’ website provides a tool that can assist you in finding your unclaimed property. Click here to search the NAUPA.
