What is a Letter of Direction/Authority?
You may be asked to provide a Letter of Direction (LOD), which is a legal document that provides UMG with instructions on where to direct payment.
Why is a Letter of Direction/Authority needed?
Your Account Name is linked to your contract and the bank account where payments are made, if applicable, and to the information that is sent to the IRS, a change to your Account Name (Payee Name) will require updates to different documents. Please note that this letter is subject to the review and approval of UMG Business and Legal Affairs.

What needs to be included in a Letter of Direction/Authority?
Universal Music Group requires:
- Handwritten signature from the current account holder authorizing us to pay the new party
- Account/Payee number(s) (if possible)
- Reference to the original recording/producer agreement with UMG (or UMG label)
💡 Note: If you are submitting a Letter of Direction to change a name on your Account/Payee Name, you must include the applicable banking payment authorization form and tax form.
